I went to the doctor recently and she told me every time I go in there, I bring a feeling of calm, and that her office feels all Zen.

This isn’t an unusual reflection for me. Last time I went to the dentist he said a similar thing.

It’s not just medical professionals that experience me as calming - a while back I asked Facebook what three words best described me, and yep - one of the top three was various variations on calm.

At first I wasn’t so on board with calm. It felt boring. It felt lacking energy and drive and passion.

But instead of resisting or trying to force myself into a sexier and more interesting box, I decided to do an experiment. What might happen if I embraced calm? What might happen if I dove in and explored how deep into calm I could go?

Calm is the eye of the storm.

Calm is safe harbour.

Calm is a regulated nervous system that has the capacity to handle the challenges of life with grace.

Calm is a super power when holding space for others - like the doctor, other people’s nervous systems pick up on the calm of mine, and they start to feel that things are okay. They start to feel that nothing’s wrong here. They start to feel like THEY’RE ok, exactly as they are.

They start feeling softer, more spacious, more at ease. And when we feel softer, more spacious, more at ease… things start to feel more possible.

Our hurts feel like they can be healed. Or dreams feel like they’re so close we can touch them. Change feels enlivening instead of terrifying.

With calm comes safety, and with safety comes openness, and with openness comes connection, curiosity, creativity, love.

And out of calm are born all those things I thought were sexier than calm. Energy, drive, passion.

And because they’re grounded in a state of calm, they’re stable, clear and bright. They won’t fade or burn out.

Out of resistance, I’ve come to love calm. A gentle beacon in a crazy world.

Kindness, softness, a safe harbour for overwhelm.

I love that this is who I am, and who I continue to more deeply become.

Need some calm in your life? I have lots!
