Making art is making magic.
Making art is making magic.
How does it feel to have the power to make something that wasn’t there before? To create something from nothing? A blank page now covered in colours.
Mostly, we take it for granted (I know I do).
But sometimes, every now and then, I realise that the drawing I’ve just done, or the meal I’ve just cooked - that’s an act of magic making. With my two human hands, I’ve created something that wasn’t there before. Filled a blank page, filled an empty bowl.
We do it all day long. The meals we cook, the photos we take with our phones, the way we dress and do our makeup, the gardens we grow, the art we make. Creating things that weren’t there before.
Life is funnelled through us and expressed in ways that only we can, in only that moment.
Sometimes, the joy of creating something just for the sake of creating it is enough.
But if we feel like it, we can look at our creations more deeply and understand ourselves better. What we make and how we make it tells us stories about who we think we are, what we dream of, what we need, if we know how to listen to them.
That’s the power of art therapy - using the magic of making art to better understand the story that is us, and, if we want to, to change the story. Rewrite chapters, change the ending, make the characters different, make magic with our two human hands.
If this all sounds a bit good to you, perhaps art therapy is for you - and perhaps you’d like to join a friendly fortnightly therapeutic art group that’s starting in October? It’s online, run by myself and my good friend and art therapist colleague Rose, and we’ll be creating something different with our human hands each time we meet.
