Permission to be silly.

Know what’s missing lately?

Silliness. Absurdity. The whimsical and strange.

Not as a way to bypass the weight of the world, not as a way to stick your head in the sand or your fingers in your ears singing ‘la la la I’m not listening’ (although - good strategies, sometimes necessary).

But as a way to help us stay human.

Yes! The world is hard and full of uncertainty and grief and things to rage against. Specially now. And it’s important to grieve, and it’s important to rage.

AND

It’s important not to get stuck there, always oriented towards the challenges, always focusing on the tricky road ahead.

Let’s also remember how to find silliness together. How to meet one another’s gazes, see the quirk of someone’s lips that says they’re trying not to laugh, how to both dissolve into giggles.

Let’s remember how to stay soft. We don’t need to harden up, we don’t need to become impenetrable and unassailable fortresses, alone on our hilltops, surrounded by bottomless moats of unshed tears.

Maybe we need to find something to wonder at - and to wonder at it together. A moment of connected lightness. Instead of following breadcrumbs out of the fairytale forest, instead let’s follow crumbs of joy INTO the forest, into the trees.

Let’s build a treehouse, let’s build a portal into another dimension, let’s get silly, let’s see what happens then.

Let’s remember, together, and let's let silliness fuel us to then go do what needs to be done.

Also, you might like to come join Art Journal Joy - it’s a 6 week online workshop series, some creative self care, that comes with a big dose of silliness as well as space and kindness for the heaviness, for the grief and the rage.

Maybe silliness is the antidote you’ve been looking for…
